Apple AirPods will no longer be produced in China
A new agreement between Hon Hai Precision Industry (Foxconn) and Apple will allow AirPods to be manufactured in India for the first time. According to Reuters, Foxconn plans to invest around $200 million in a new factory in India that will produce Apple's wireless headphones, among other products.
Although AirPods production offers very low margins compared to what Foxconn earns from iPhone production, the company went ahead with the agreement to strengthen its relationship with Apple. Apple specifically requested that production be located in India, as the company has been trying to end production in China.
Foxconn, one of the world's largest manufacturers of electronic components, has been a long-standing partner of Apple and has been manufacturing iPhones for the company in China for years. However, recent trade tensions between the US and China, along with the ongoing pandemic, have made diversification a priority for both companies.

India is seen as an attractive destination for manufacturers due to its large and growing consumer market and favourable government policies aimed at encouraging the establishment of new factories. Foxconn plans to expand its production capabilities outside of China, reduce its dependence on the country, and create up to 70,000 jobs in India by 2024.
The move to AirPods production in India is part of Apple's efforts to increase its presence in the country. India is one of the world's largest smartphone markets, but Apple has struggled to establish itself due to the high cost of its products. By manufacturing in India, Apple can take advantage of local tax incentives and lower labour costs, which could help make its products more accessible to Indian consumers and enable the opening of the country's first Apple Stores this year.

Overall, the agreement between Foxconn and Apple for AirPods production in India will be a strategic move for both companies, bringing numerous advantages. Foxconn will be able to diversify its manufacturing capabilities and strengthen its involvement with Apple, while Apple will increase its presence in one of the world's largest and fastest-growing markets.
