The fall of Android: Apple's iPhone is winning over more and more users

The Android ecosystem continues to have a massive presence worldwide. However, the switch from Android to iPhone and loyalty to Apple's system seem to be gaining increasing prominence.

A recent article by Counterpoint Research reveals that the migration of users from Android to iOS boosted Apple's share of the smartphone market in the United States, even with the global market contraction in the first months of this year. A new report from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) reinforces this notion, highlighting the notable migration of users to the Apple brand over the last decade.

The transition between operating systems is often seen as a challenge by smartphone owners, leading to tenacious loyalty to the current operating system. However, in the last two years, there has been an increase in the proportion of new iPhone users who previously used Android devices, which is due to Apple's continuous investment in facilitating the transition from Android to iOS, developing specific applications for this purpose.

The "Move to iOS" app allows for a hassle-free migration of essential user data, such as contacts, messages, photos and videos, email accounts, calendars, and even free applications. This app was designed to minimize the difficulties inherent in switching ecosystems, smoothing the learning curve for new iPhone users. With these efforts, Apple has been able to attract more Android users.

CIRP examined iPhone purchase data over the past nine years, considering the smartphones that iPhone buyers owned before acquiring their new device. They found that, from March 2022 to March 2023, 15% of people who bought an iPhone indicated that they migrated from an Android phone, while 83% remained loyal to the iPhone.

In 2016, the rate of iPhone buyers coming from the Android ecosystem reached its peak at 21%. This rate progressively decreased to 10% by March 2020. Since then, we have observed a gradual increase, reaching the current value of 15%. In parallel, the rate of iPhone users who consistently purchase new iPhones has increased, demonstrating the loyalty of Apple users.

Contrary to the situation 10 years ago, today alternatives to Android and iOS are practically non-existent. Huawei, whose HarmonyOS operating system is the choice for some users, is not included in this study, as it refers only to the US, unlike what might happen in Europe.
